Cast or calendered vinyl?

The two main families of vinyl behave very differently. Cast vinyl is thin and conforms well to curves. Calendered vinyl is thicker and stiffer, so it suits flat surfaces.

If the surface has compound curves, recesses or rivets, use cast vinyl. Calendered film tends to lift on those surfaces.

Which vinyl for which job?

Tips for longer-lasting vinyl

• Choose air-release film for vehicle wraps. Micro-channel adhesive lets air escape during application, giving faster, bubble-free results.
• Use permanent adhesive on vehicles. In Sri Lanka's heat, repositionable adhesives lose their holding power.
• Add an overlaminate to printed graphics. A UV-resistant laminate protects the ink and can extend outdoor life considerably.
• Allow for the climate. Reduce manufacturer outdoor ratings by about 25 to 35% for Sri Lankan conditions.
• Post-heat edges and stretched areas with a heat gun to lock the film in place.

Which vinyl is best for a full car wrap?

Use cast vinyl with air-release adhesive. Cast film conforms to curves, recesses and complex panels. Calendered vinyl is stiffer and is better kept for flat surfaces.

How long does outdoor vinyl last in Sri Lanka?

Strong sunlight and humidity age vinyl faster than the manufacturer ratings, which are tested in milder climates. As a rule of thumb, reduce the rated outdoor life by about 25 to 35%.
