Nawa Lanka Enterprises supplies acrylic sheets in Sri Lanka for sign makers, print shops and display fabricators. We stock cast and extruded acrylic in a range of thicknesses and colours at our Colombo and Anuradhapura branches.
Acrylic, also known as PMMA or Perspex, is lightweight, shatter-resistant and easy to cut, rout or laser engrave. That is why it is the standard material for lightboxes, channel letters and retail displays.
What you can make with acrylic sheets
- Lightbox face panels, front-lit and backlit
- Channel letter faces
- Freestanding display panels and menu boards
- Cabinet signs and frame-mounted displays
- Decorative and architectural elements
- Laser-engraved awards and promotional items
Acrylic sheet thickness guide
The right thickness depends on the size of the sign, how it is mounted and whether it faces wind outdoors.
| Thickness | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 2mm | Indoor flat displays, frame-inserted panels and small menu boards. |
| 3mm | The most versatile grade: most indoor signage, lightbox faces up to 600mm wide and flat-cut letters up to 100mm tall. |
| 4 to 5mm | Outdoor flat-cut letters, lightbox faces 600 to 1200mm wide and any sign exposed to wind. |
| 6mm | Heavy-duty outdoor signs, large channel letter faces and freestanding panels. |
| 8 to 10mm | Architectural signage, large-format panels, laser-engraved awards and plaques. |
| 12mm and above | Specialist uses such as counters, display plinths and structural branding elements. |
Cast or extruded acrylic?
Cast acrylic is made by pouring liquid acrylic between glass plates. It has better clarity, more consistent thickness and engraves cleanly, so it suits backlit signs, laser engraving and premium displays.
Extruded acrylic is made by pushing molten acrylic through a die. It costs less and works well for flat-cut lettering and indoor displays where budget matters. For illuminated signs and anything you plan to engrave, choose cast.
Colours and finishes
- Clear: for lightbox faces and display panels where light needs to pass through.
- Translucent, including opal white and colours: diffuses light evenly for backlit signs.
- Opaque solid colours: for non-illuminated signs, flat-cut letters and decorative panels.
- Mirror: chrome or gold finishes for lettering and retail displays.
- Frosted or matte: for privacy panels and high-end retail signage.
Choosing acrylic for Sri Lanka's climate
Strong sunlight, humidity and monsoon rain are hard on plastics. For outdoor signs, check the manufacturer's UV resistance information and avoid unbranded budget sheets, which can yellow within a year. Our complete acrylic sheet selection guide explains what to look for in detail.
Acrylic sheet FAQ
Which acrylic sheet thickness should I use for outdoor letters?
For outdoor flat-cut letters we recommend 4 to 5mm. For heavy-duty outdoor signs and large channel letter faces, 6mm gives better structural strength.
Can acrylic sheets be laser engraved?
Yes, but use cast acrylic. Extruded acrylic carries internal stress and can crack under the heat of laser engraving.
